July ICOY Trainings on Trauma
For our July training series, we hosted three trainings facilitated by the Illinois Collaboration on Youth (ICOY). Jocelyn Vega, Trauma Specialist for ICOY, will lead all of the trainings.
About the Trainer: In her role at ICOY, Jocelyn supports with technical assistance, training and capacity-building. Prior to joining ICOY, Jocelyn provided crisis intervention, safety planning and court support to individuals who experienced harm at the Cook County Domestic Violence Courthouse. During her time there, she also initiated trauma-informed care policy and language access values for a legal aid agency providing legal representation for Orders of Protection. Over the course of her career, Jocelyn has additionally interviewed Khmer Rouge survivors and provided program consulting for a research fellowship in Siem Reap, Cambodia, as well as served as a legal translator for undocumented farmworkers in upstate New York. Using Restorative Culture to Meet Staff Needs and Strengthen Staff Culture During Remote Learning and Beyond (THREE PART TRAINING SERIES)
June 2-16, 2020 | 2-4pm CST | By Andrew Hong
When talking about a school's culture and the pursuit for Restorativeness, staff culture and adult relationships often get left out due to the understandable focus on supporting students. However, Restorative Justice is about the whole community, and staff and admin are just as much a part of a school community as students are. The adults have identities, needs, and harms that are just as important to acknowledge--especially during this pandemic--and failing to acknowledge sends a contradicting message that the adults are expected to deliver Restorative Practices to students, but don't deserve to receive it themselves. If staff don't receive the experience of Restorative Culture for themselves, and staff-to-staff/admin-to-staff interactions remain "business as usual", how can we expect the adults to deliver something they don't receive? This series of sessions will focus on the relationships of the adults in a school community, and how Restorative Practices can be implemented to build, maintain, and repair those relationships.
TARGET AUDIENCE: School Staff, Highly Recommended for Principals and Assistant Principals
REGISTRATION AND COMMITMENT TO ALL THREE SESSIONS IS REQUIRED
Session 1: Overview of Restorative Mindsets, Principles, and Language in the Context of Staff Culture
Date and Time: June 2nd, 2020 2-4pm
Before implementing Restorative Practices with students or adults, it is critical to ground one's mindset and understanding of Restorative Justice principles and beliefs. This session serves as an intro to the core mindsets and principles of Restorative Justice and the specific types of Restorative Language that serve as the foundation of building a stronger community. Participants will engage in deeper dialogue and activities in order to not only understand, but actually examine and practice the concepts and what they look like when used with adults/in common staff situations.
Session 2: Restorative Mindsets and Principles in Action during Staff Meetings, Staff-Staff Conflicts, Admin-Staff Conflicts, and Ongoing Support
Date and Time: June 9th, 2020 2-4pm
How can colleagues/admin restoratively approach a staff member who is not accomplishing certain tasks? How can the structure of grade-level meetings or leadership team meetings change to promote equity of voice? This session will address such scenarios by building off of session 1's Restorative Justice principles and translating them into specific, manageable ways Restorative Practices can strengthen staff procedures and relationships. This session serves as a development of session 1, "Overview of Restorative Mindsets, Principles, and Language in the Context of Staff Culture", and requires an understanding of those core concepts.
Session 3: Constructive Reflection/Debrief/Problem Solving after Implementing Restorative Language
Date and Time: June 16th, 2020 2-3pm
This session is an open space inviting educators who have begun to either implement Restorative Practices with staff or plan ways to do so. The space will invite them to debrief, bring questions about, and/or troubleshoot things they have tried/will try, and I will offer real-time consultation and support.
Foundations of Restorative Practice
May 19th, 2020 | 10am-12pm CST | By Sarah Bess (SB) Dworin
As we move deeper into this global crisis, many are questioning ways of being and doing that feel outdated or unhelpful. This session explores the potential of a paradigm shift from punitive to restorative approaches to harm and punishment. Whether you're trying to address harm and conflict at home, at work, or at large in the world, we'll answer the question: when harm occurs, how do we make it right? Grounded in values and mindsets of Restorative Justice, come to reflect on your own personal mindsets about addressing conflict and harm in your relationships. Through experiential exercises, lively discussion, and small group work, this session lays the groundwork for cultivating a restorative culture.
Circle Up!
May 6th, 2020 | 10am-12pm CST | Facilitated by Sarah Bess (SB) Dworin
Worried you and your colleagues are turning into 'Zoombies''?! Do endless Zoom meetings fill your days (and nights)? Come to "Circle Up" where you'll learn about Circles, a core Restorative Practice that can make online meetings and gatherings more relational, intentional, and meaningful. You'll become familiar with the key elements of Circles, including roles and routines to foster accountability and equity. All will come away with an appreciation for the power of Circles to foster meaningful relationships and understanding, both during and beyond this pandemic. Most importantly, you'll take away the resources to facilitate Circles of your own--at home, work and (...yikes...) on Zoom!
